The Tang Dynasty Show recreates the court entertainment of the Tang dynasty (618–907), when Xi'an — then Chang'an — was the Silk Road's eastern capital and one of the world's great cities. Costumes, choreography and music are reconstructed from Tang murals, poetry and palace records, so what you watch isn't a generic 'Chinese show' but a specific attempt to stage a particular, cosmopolitan moment in history. It unfolds as a series of tableaux — procession, solo, signature dance, finale — like a painted handscroll opening scene by scene.
The music of the Silk Road
At the centre is the pipa, the pear-shaped lute that travelled into China along the Silk Road, joined by the dizi flute, the guzheng zither, chimes and drums. Tang Chang'an was a melting pot — Persian, Central Asian and Chinese musicians shared its streets — and the show's score reflects that mix. The instrumental numbers, often built around a pipa solo, are for many people the quiet highlight, the moment the music steps forward before the massed dances return.
The feathered-garment dance
The show's most storied number is the 'Rainbow Skirt and Feathered Garment' dance, linked to Emperor Xuanzong and his consort Yang Guifei — one of the most famous dances in Chinese history and the subject of centuries of poetry. Staged in flowing silk, it's the performance's emotional centre. You don't need the backstory to be moved by it, but knowing that these are real historical set-pieces, not invented spectacle, is part of what gives the evening its weight.
Why it's worth an evening
For a visitor, the show is the most direct way to feel the Tang world that Xi'an's daytime sights — the city wall, the pagodas, the Terracotta Army's later echoes — only gesture at. It's non-verbal, so there's no language barrier; it's about an hour long; and paired with the dumpling banquet it becomes a complete night out. In a city defined by its imperial past, it's the one place that puts that past, briefly, back in motion on a stage.
